Youth registrations are now open.

Before you register, please make sure you read the section below — Changes to Youth Hockey.

25 FEBRUARY 2025 UPDATE

As advised in earlier messages, youth registrations have advanced at unprecedented levels and as of 25 February there are already more registrations than there are places available.  Accordingly, all registrations received after 24 February will be deemed to be on a waiting list and may not be invited to trial.  The exceptions are that I am still able to accommodate 2-3 boys, and any girls who are GKs.

If you do decide to register to be on the waiting list, please do so in PlayHQ, but DO NOT PAY any subscriptions or trial fees at this time, pending clarification of numbers and trials.

Please email John Williams at somervilleyouthhockey@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Changes to Youth Hockey for 2025

AHA have announced changes to this year's youth competition format. The youth grade will ONLY be played on Sunday morning (no more Friday nights). Once teams are registered there will be grading rounds and then competition rounds in divisions based on ability.

Also you need to be under 17 on 1st January 2025. There will be the possibility of exemptions for players 16 or over and still at school, based on ability and experience.

If you are NOT under 17 you should consider attending divisional trials; please look at the senior page of the website and register through this. Youth trials are after divisional trials so there is still that option for you.

AHA have not yet confirmed all details, and we expect some of you will have questions and may be looking for further guidance. If so, please email John Williams at somervilleyouthhockey@gmail.com

Goalkeepers are NOT required for the first trial (16th March) as this will be 5 or 6 a side games only.

2025 Registration

Registration opens 8 February 2025

Returning Somerville players

Returning Somerville players (Youth or Junior) and new siblings are guaranteed placement when registered before 22 February with subscription payment by 25 February, at which point you are eligible to trial. Families will receive an email reminder/prompt if payment is not received.

If your contact details have changed, or you played for Somerville Youth last year and will not be returning, please advise us by emailing somervilleyouthhockey@gmail.com as this helps manage our contacts database, communications and registrations.

New Players

New players must register/apply and initially make NO payment.

Before we can accept new player registrations, we must confirm that we can accommodate total numbers given constraints on training venue capacity.  If the number of registrations exceeds the club’s allocated training spaces, new registrations will be prioritised in the following order:

1. Offer of coaching assistance or club administration
2. New players in date order of registration

Successful applicants will receive an email by 9 March with payment due in 10 days to confirm your placement.

Unsuccessful registrations will be contacted as soon as we can be certain that we are unable to accommodate you.

Pre-season Clinics

To support your return to hockey, a number of pre-season clinics are scheduled from early February, open to all Youth players. There is a separate registration process and fee for these clinics; refer to the link below for dates, times and details.

As of 28th January - these are closed due to high numbers.

Youth Fees

The Somerville Committee has set the fee for Youth players at $360 per player, which includes a $40 non-refundable cost for trials.

  • There is a family discount of $25 per subscription where 3 or more Youth or Junior players are from the same family (not including Senior adult players).

Somerville Youth fees cover practice equipment, turf fees for matches and practice for two school terms and a uniform levy. The fees also cover levies paid to Auckland Hockey Association and Hockey NZ (for administration, coaching support, representative programmes and AHA facilities).

Youth Trials

Trials are held at Auckland Grammar School turf, Normanby Road, Mt Eden.

  • Somerville’s trial and selection process information is available on our Club website

  • For details of dates and times for trials please refer to the Youth page on our website

  • Teams are selected based on players’ attendance and performance at these sessions

  • We intend to name squads over Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 April; this will be communicated by email

Youth trial process & selection protocol

All players must register online their intent to trial. A trial registration fee will be included in this process regardless of participation to cover turf/umpire costs. Full season subscriptions may be paid at this time however, this will not guarantee placement at the Club. A refund will be paid to those unable to be placed in a team.

There will be a minimum of 3 trials to help determine team selections.

TRIAL 1 | will be predominantly small-team (5 or 6 players) matches on quarter or half fields to allow selectors to have greater visibility of all players.

TRIAL 2 | players will be assessed in full field matches in positions at the discretion of selectors.

  • Some players may not be required to attend this trial, at the selectors’ discretion.  These players will be notified before the trial.

  • At the completion of this trial selectors may request that players attend either an early or late session for the final trial. A small number of players may have to compete in both sessions. We will advise you as soon as possible to help with your planning.

TRIAL 3 | players will be assessed in full field matches in positions at the discretion of selectors to determine final team placement. This trial may have players asked to attend at different times so that they are competing with players of similar ability.

GOALKEEPERS | are asked to attend the 2nd and 3rd trials and may also be requested to attend a specific session where our specialist goalkeeping coaches may assess their performance.

Unless advised otherwise on the day, every player will work with the administrators and identify the position they want to play in for the next available trial.  There will be sign-up sheets.

  • Note however that we want to see you in different positions; for example, not many of you have identified Defender as your positional preference.

  • That means that striker roles at trials tend to fill up fast, and defender roles remain open.  But it's far better if the selectors see you playing more, even if it's not in your preferred position.  And each team will need roughly 30-35% of players who play defence.

  • So - by all means aim to play some games in your preferred position, but please put your name down in unfamiliar positions too - it will help the selectors, and it will help you!

Selections and team confirmation

Positional balance and individual skills and ability will always be important overarching selection principles, dominantly so for the top teams. However, in recent years the lower teams have been selected with significant weights given to the players’ year groups, to support a more cohesive social development environment. The skill margins in this segment are typically quite small, players develop at different rates, and the teams play in the same grade and therefore against the same opponents.  There have been real positives with this approach, both socially and in terms of results, and accordingly we intend to continue this approach.

  • The total number of players selected to each team will be predetermined by the selection staff and the Club Captain.

  • At the completion of the trial process a squad/team list will be displayed on the Club website within 7 days of the final trial. This may not be the “final” team, and it should be noted that the trial process may include pre or early season matches.

  • Players have 5 working days from notification date to confirm their place in the team via the online registration process, this will include subscription payment or structured payment plan arrangements.

  • Failure to confirm your place will indicate to the Club a negative registration response and placement will be offered to the next available player.

  • Only those players who are being moved down will be contacted prior to public announcement.

  • Due to the fluid nature of “Youth trials” the Club reserves the right to interchange players between teams within 21 days after the final announcement. The club does this in response to player departure after trials and in an effort to balance the needs of social interaction (age/stage), competitiveness and team/grade requirements.
